Andrew Taylor is a friend of mine and fellow singer who manages the Bolz Center for Arts Administration and its related MBA program here at UW. He makes a good point: some members of the audience don't recognize the complexity of what they DO get when they buy a ticket or support an arts organization — particularly when the organization is encumbered by outmoded "legacy" ideas (like old "legacy" software) about different audiences. They might work okay, but they won't provide for a robust future. Good food for thought.
